Message from the Provost

Dr. Robert Murray

The Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs is responsible for the broad oversight of all academic areas of College life – including all matters related to the faculty, as well as areas like advising, the library, tutoring, and registration.  Working in collaboration with the Deans of the School of Arts and Sciences, Business, and Education, the Provost maintains the integrity of all academic programs and ensures that students are given every opportunity and advantage we can offer to prepare themselves for the next step after they leave us, whether for a career or graduate school.

In the neighborhood of the New York Metropolitan Area, St. Thomas Aquinas College offers a high-quality education that seamlessly combines theory and practice in a way that allows students to put their coursework into action.  Whether through cooperative classes, internships, or research projects with faculty, our courses offer students many opportunities for experiential learning – many of which are a stone’s throw away in NYC, the greatest city in the world.  However, we also offer many opportunities to study beyond our campus – to take classes in Europe or anywhere in the world you can imagine, or to stay in the United States and study in areas a bit closer to home.

Here on campus, all of us here at St. Thomas have dedicated our professional lives to helping you succeed.  That involves a great deal of personalized attention, especially from our Academic Affairs team, anchored by our amazing faculty.  As a liberal arts college with very strong pre-professional opportunities, we want you to choose a major that prepares you for the career path you want.  However, no matter what major you choose, I hope you get to sample our wide variety of course offerings as a way to expand your horizons and begin to see the world around you in a different way.  We all work diligently to make sure that you graduate as a strong critical thinker and a lifelong learner, and there’s no better way to achieve that goal than to experience as many new ideas as possible.

To those of you who are engaged in the college decision-making process, I am sure that if you look carefully at our interesting courses, our expert faculty, and our innovative new facilities you will see that St. Thomas Aquinas College is your best choice.  There is no other college like it.

To those who are already here – you are always welcome to stop by my office in Spellman 105A to say hello and tell me how things are going for you here at the College!

Dr. Murray was appointed Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs on July 1, 2015 after serving as the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences from 2012-2015 and Chair of the Division of Humanities from 2008-2012, in addition he holds the rank of Professor of English.  He also served as Director of the Writing Program at the College.  Dr. Murray joined the faculty in 1998 after teaching at the Virginia Military Institute, Princeton University, and Rutgers University.  He received his PhD in English from Rutgers University.

He has done research in the areas of 19th Century American Literature, especially Nathaniel Hawthorne, as well as in literary realism and naturalism and African-American literature.  He has published work on composition theory, specifically on race and asymmetrical power relationships in a writing class.
