News & Events

The student who graduates with an Accounting degree will have the ability to think critically and solve issues involving complex accounting and business issues.  After developing a required understanding of the overall operations of the financial market from this point of view, Accounting majors are able to expand their minds by describing and assessing opportunities and risks in the economic arena.

Accounting at STAC
The curriculum is designed to prepare students for entry into professional accounting careers or into graduate school. It achieves a balance between an extensive liberal arts curriculum and the study of accounting and other business disciplines. The program seeks to be an integral component in the mission of the College.

Students begin with acquiring a basic understanding of Accounting in two introductory courses and then continue in the program learning more about Cost and Budgets, Federal Income Taxation, Auditing, and even Accounting for Not-for-Profit Organizations.

Accounting students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in skills such as information technology and communication. They will develop the ability to think critically and use problem solving techniques in strategic decision making. They will achieve an understanding of accounting theory and practical applications.  The program will emphasize an ethical perspective of the global economy and prepare graduates to meet the needs of the modern workplace.

The accounting faculty is dedicated to maintaining a high standard of teaching. They continue their professional development through continuing education, scholarship, participation in professional organizations, and service to the College and the community.

Upon completion of the Accounting major, students will

  • Be able to use modern technology for problem solving and other related tasks in accounting.
  • Be able to understand, prepare and analyze financial statements in order to facilitate decision making.
  • Learn to develop an ethical perspective when confronting accounting issues
  • Enhance communication skills through research projects and case study analyses.
  • Understand the global aspects of business.

Be aware of internship and part-time work opportunities during their undergraduate years. They will also be guided when seeking full-time careers or graduate school admission up graduation.

There is also access to an Accounting lab to help students hone their skills while working with our dedicated faculty in achieving success in the field.  Students should also build their portfolio as they make themselves marketable candidates in a tough market by engaging in an internship with a local accounting firm.  Getting involved in student activities such as the Student Government Association, the Business Club, and the Campus Activities Board, is also a few of the many options we have that you can explore.

MBA Program
We also offer a five-year combined Bachelor of Science in Accounting and MBA degree. This program is registered with New York State and meets the education requirements for licensure as a certified public accountant. Students can continue into the college’s Master of Business Administration program upon graduation and earn their degree in as little as one year. Visit our MBA webpage for more details.

If you are interested in positions in public accounting, governmental and non-profit organizations, internal auditing, taxation and managerial accounting, you should major in accounting.  For more information about what you can do with this major, visit our Career Services website.
